If you are weighing up a used Kia Soul, two yearly bills are easy to pin down: road tax and car insurance. This page works through both for the Soul 1.6. It also covers the COE section of our price page.
The Soul is not on the new-car list now. The insurance prices below are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They give you a sense of the market, not your own quote.
The version on our form
Our quote form lists one version:
- Soul 1.6: 1,591cc
With no new-car list entry, there is no list price. All figures below are for the 1.6. Because the form carries just this one engine size, the road tax and COE notes below should match most Souls you find for sale. Check the papers to be sure.
COE
For the Soul 1.6, with a 1,591cc engine, the COE category depends on power. The price page's COE section says it needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. Results change each round; the COE page has the latest. On a used Soul, check the COE expiry date, as the years left shape the car's value.
Road tax
For a 1,591cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$737.62 a year, before any age surcharge.
The surcharge on older cars:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The road tax page explains how the base sum is set.
Insuring a Soul: the example
The Kia Soul price page prices one case:
- Car: Soul 1.6, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
14 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$660.69. The insurer with the dearest lowest plan asks at least S$1,120.89. That is S$460.20 more, or 70% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Two insurers that price cars online have no online price for the Soul. For one, the reason is that the model is not on its online quote. The other has no online price for it yet.
Excess
The excess is the amount of each claim that you pay. The page has 21 plans. Ten carry S$600. Three ask S$500 and three S$800. Three ask S$2,500, one asks S$3,000 and one has no excess.
A premium is only half the cost of a policy. The other half shows up when you claim. So, for each plan you shortlist, note both figures side by side.
How the price changes
The price page shows the lowest premium after one change:
- No NCD (0%): S$864.63, S$203.94 more
- 20% NCD: S$864.63, S$203.94 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$864.63, S$203.94 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$660.69, the same
- New car, registered this year: S$666.79, S$6.10 more
- Car 8 years old: S$604.07, S$56.62 less
No NCD is the costliest change: the lowest price is 31% higher. The younger driver with 30% NCD reaches the same figure. The older driver pays the same as the 40-year-old.
Car age makes less difference. A new Soul is S$6.10 dearer to insure, and an 8-year-old one S$56.62 cheaper. Since you would be buying used, the 8-year-old row may be the better guide. These are lowest prices; dearer plans may move by other amounts.
One more point. The insurer that is lowest changes once the NCD drops below 50%. So if your discount is lower than the example, the ranking on the page is not the one you will face.
Against similar cars
The price page sets the Soul beside six similar cars, for the same driver and car age:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
They average S$724.93. The Soul costs 9% less than that. Three of the six are cheaper to insure: the Corolla Altis, the Freed and the Sienta. The Kona, the X1 and the Mazda 3 cost more. Other Kia models are on the Kia car insurance page.
Costs that depend on you
These vary from owner to owner, so we give no figures:
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus work and errands.
- Petrol: depends on how far you drive and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and times.
- Servicing and repairs: on a used car, ask for the service history and what is due next.
- Depreciation: depends on the price you pay and the COE life left.
