Kia Carens costs in Singapore for road tax, COE and insurance

A Kia Carens in Singapore, cost by cost: Category B COE for the 1.7, road tax and how insurance changes with NCD, driver and car age.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

If a Kia Carens is on your shortlist, it helps to know the fixed yearly costs before you look at the asking price. This page goes through road tax, car insurance and the COE category, using figures from our price page and LTA's formula.

There is no Carens on the new-car list now, so you would be buying a used one. Every insurance price below is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. It is a guide, not your quote.

Versions we price

Our quote form lists three versions:

  • Carens 1.7: 1,685cc
  • Carens 1.8: 1,793cc
  • Carens 2.0: 1,991cc

The insurance figures are for the 1.7, which most insurers quote. As the model is not on the new-car list, there is no list price to give.

Each version has a different engine size, so the road tax differs between them. Check the car's papers for the engine size before you use these figures.

The COE

The price page's COE section says the Carens 1.7, with a 1,685cc engine, is above 1,600cc. It needs a Category B COE.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category B closed at S$130,100. COE results change every round, and the COE page has the newest. With a used car, the COE expiry date is part of what you pay for, so check it early.

Road tax

For the 1.7's 1,685cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$842.60 a year, before any age surcharge. The 1.8 and 2.0 pay more. The road tax page covers those sizes.

The surcharge for age:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Insurance for the example driver

The Kia Carens price page prices this case:

  • Car: Carens 1.7, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons

15 insurers price the Carens. The lowest premium is S$742.90. The insurer with the dearest lowest plan asks at least S$1,206.65, which is S$463.75 more, or 62% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Only one insurer that prices cars online has no online price for the Carens yet. So nearly the whole market is in the comparison, which gives you plenty to choose from.

The excess

Each plan has an excess, the part of a claim you pay. Of the 23 plans on this page, ten carry S$600. Three ask S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three ask S$2,500 and one S$3,000. One plan has no excess.

If you think you may claim, a lower excess can be worth more than a small saving on the premium. Ask each insurer whether the excess changes for any other driver you plan to name on the policy.

How the price moves

The price page reprices the car with one thing changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$973.59, S$230.69 more
  • 20% NCD: S$973.59, S$230.69 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$973.59, S$230.69 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$742.90, the same
  • New car, registered this year: S$764.82, S$21.92 more
  • Car 8 years old: S$666.79, S$76.11 less

Having no NCD costs the most, with the lowest price 31% higher. A 27-year-old with 3 years' driving lands on the same sum. The 65-year-old pays the same as the 40-year-old base driver. An 8-year-old Carens costs less to insure than the 3-year-old car, and a new one a little more.

These are the lowest prices only. Other plans on the page may react differently to the same change.

Note also that a different insurer is lowest once the NCD drops. If your own discount is below 50%, the base-case ranking will not hold for you, so compare again with your real figure.

Against similar cars

The price page compares six similar cars, at the same driver and car age:

They average S$724.93. The Carens costs 2% more than that, so it sits near the middle of the group. Four of the six are cheaper to insure; the Mazda 3 and BMW X1 cost more. The Freed and Sienta are the lowest of the group, at S$642.42 and S$604.07. Other Kia models are on the Kia car insurance page.

Costs that depend on your own use

We give no figures for these:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus school, office and mall parking.
  • Petrol: depends on how far you drive and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on your daily routes and times.
  • Servicing and repairs: on a used car, ask for the service history. Tyres, brakes and a battery come up over time.
  • Depreciation: tied to what you pay and the COE years remaining.

Summary of yearly costs we can show
