The short verdict on cost: losing your NCD lifts the Niro Hybrid's lowest price by only 12%, but it costs more to insure than most of the similar cars on its price page. The detail below shows why both are true, and what the other running costs look like.
This guide suits anyone weighing a Niro against other small SUVs or hatchbacks. The insurance prices are examples for one driver, read on 20 October 2026. Your quote will depend on your own details, so use the figures as a guide.
The Niro on sale
The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 shows the Niro as an SUV made in Korea. Two versions are listed, both petrol-electric hybrids:
- Niro Hybrid 1.6 Air: 1,580cc, 127bhp
- Niro Hybrid 1.6 Earth: 1,580cc, 127bhp
Our quote form also has a Niro Electric. The insurance figures here are for the Niro Hybrid 1.6 GDI DCT, 1,580cc, the version most insurers on our panel quote.
What you pay up front
As listed on 2026-10-10, including COE:
- Hybrid 1.6 Air: S$199,999
- Hybrid 1.6 Earth: S$217,999
These shift with each COE round. A dealer's figure on the day may be higher or lower. Check what each offer includes before you compare.
Which COE
For the Niro Hybrid with its 1,580cc engine, the price page sets out the rule. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The COE page has each new round's results.
Road tax
The 1,580cc engine sets road tax at S$731.18 a year under LTA's formula, before any age surcharge.
If you keep the car past 10 years, a surcharge is added:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The Niro Electric is taxed on its motor, not an engine size, so its road tax is different. See the road tax page for both kinds.
Insurance for the page's driver
The Kia Niro price page prices this profile:
- Car: Niro Hybrid 1.6, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
For it, 14 insurers give a price. The lowest premium is S$804.19 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,381.06, S$576.87 more, or 72% on top. All prices include 9% GST. Two insurers on our panel have no online price for the Niro yet.
The excess on each plan
Most plans here set the excess, the part of a claim you pay, at S$600. One plan has S$0 and others run up to S$3,000. A low premium may sit with a high excess, so compare the two together.
Who it suits on cost, and who pays more
A family's main driver with a full NCD pays the standard figure above. That is the base case for the page.
A younger driver sees a modest jump. A driver aged 27 with three years' driving and 30% NCD has a lowest price of S$904.35. That is S$100.16 more.
A driver who has lost the NCD pays the same S$904.35, which is 12% more.
An older driver, aged 65 with 20 or more years' driving, pays S$878.82, which is S$74.63 more.
A buyer of a new car pays S$828.39, S$24.20 more than the 3-year-old example.
A buyer of an 8-year-old car pays S$765.46, S$38.73 less.
All of these are lowest prices only. Dearer plans can move by other sums. The 20% NCD case also sits at S$904.35.
Against similar cars
The price page lists six similar cars for the same driver and car age:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
Their average lowest price is S$724.93. The Niro costs 11% more than that, and four of the six cost less to insure. Only the Mazda 3 costs more of this group. The Kia car insurance page covers Kia's other models.
Questions to ask yourself
- How settled is your NCD? For this car the NCD moves the lowest price by 12%.
- Who else will drive? A young named driver can change your quote, so price them in.
- How long will you keep it? Road tax rises past 10 years, and the COE runs out at the end of its term.
- Hybrid or electric? The two are taxed and priced in different ways, so quote the one you mean to buy.
Running costs only you can estimate
- Parking: your HDB block or condo season rate, and parking at work and in town.
- Petrol: depends on your distance and the pump price. The hybrid pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor.
- ERP: depends on your routes and times.
- Servicing: follow the maker's schedule. Ask what the warranty covers, including any hybrid parts.
- Depreciation: depends on what you pay and what the car fetches later.
