The Kia Rio is one of the lower-cost cars to insure on our price pages. On our figures, none of the six similar cars it is compared with costs less. This page goes through that, and the other yearly costs we can show: road tax and the COE.
There is no Rio on the new-car list now, so you would be buying used. Insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They help you compare; they are not a quote.
Rio versions on the form
Our quote form lists four:
- Rio 1.3: 1,343cc
- Rio 1.4: 1,396cc
- Rio 1.5 CRDi: 1,493cc
- Rio 1.6: 1,591cc
The insurance figures are for the 1.3, the version most insurers quote. No list price is shown, as the new-car list does not carry the Rio. Engine sizes differ across the four, so road tax does too. Check the car's papers before you use the figures below.
COE
For the Rio 1.3, with a 1,343cc engine, the COE category depends on power. The price page's COE section says it needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These change every round; the COE page has the latest. With a used car, the remaining COE life matters as much as the price.
Road tax
For the 1.3's 1,343cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$592.16 a year, before any age surcharge. The road tax page covers the other three engine sizes.
The age surcharge:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
A used Rio may already be close to or past the 10-year mark. Check the registration date so you know which step applies.
Insurance for the example driver
The Kia Rio price page uses this case:
- Car: Rio 1.3, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
15 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$604.07. The insurer with the dearest lowest plan asks at least S$1,024.41. That is S$420.34 more, or 70% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Only one insurer that prices cars online has no online price for the Rio yet. So you can compare across almost the whole market, and see how far apart the plans are.
The excess
The excess is the part of each claim you pay. The page has 23 plans. Ten carry S$600. Three ask S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three ask S$2,500 and one asks S$3,000. One plan has no excess at all.
The premiums on a car like the Rio are fairly low, so a high excess can be large next to them. A S$3,000 excess is several times the lowest premium on the page. Keep that in mind when you compare.
What changes the premium
The price page reprices the car with one change:
- No NCD (0%): S$834.26, S$230.19 more
- 20% NCD: S$834.26, S$230.19 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$834.26, S$230.19 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$604.07, the same
- New car, registered this year: S$622.34, S$18.27 more
- Car 8 years old: S$552.91, S$51.16 less
No NCD costs the most, with the lowest price 38% higher. The young driver lands at the same S$834.26. The 65-year-old pays the same as the 40-year-old.
An older Rio is cheaper to insure, and a newer one slightly dearer. Since any Rio on sale now is used, the 8-year-old figure is a useful reference. These are only the lowest prices; others on the page may change by different amounts.
Against similar cars
The price page compares six similar cars, priced for the same driver and car age:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Mercedes-Benz C-Class: S$749.93
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
Their average lowest price is S$753.91. The Rio costs 20% less than that. None of the six is cheaper to insure; the Toyota Sienta matches it at S$604.07. Other Kia models are on the Kia car insurance page.
Costs that vary by owner
We do not give figures for these:
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus work and shopping trips.
- Fuel: depends on how far you drive and the pump price.
- ERP: depends on your routes and times.
- Servicing and repairs: ask for the service history on a used car, and what is due next.
- Depreciation: depends on the price you pay and the COE years left.
