Perodua Viva in Singapore, the yearly costs of a 989cc car

The Perodua Viva 1.0 in Singapore: road tax of S$388.84 a year, its COE category and dated car insurance prices for several kinds of driver.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

With a 989cc engine, the Perodua Viva has a small road tax bill. Its insurance is low for an experienced driver too, and the lowest price holds as the car gets older. The figure that moves is the no-claim discount. This guide goes through each cost the facts can show, with the COE category.

All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Use them to compare, not as your quote.

The version priced

Our quote form prices the Viva 1.0, with a 989cc engine. It is the version most insurers quote, and the only one this guide covers.

The new-car list read for this guide has no Viva on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type here.

Which COE category

For the Viva 1.0, with its 989cc engine, the category depends on power:

  • Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less
  • Category B: if it is more

Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round. A used Viva keeps its COE until it expires. Check the date before you agree a price. The COE page has the latest.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 989cc engine S$388.84 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.

Once the car passes 10 years old, a surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page has the formula.

12 insurers price it, across 17 plans. The lowest premium is S$545.00, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,048.68. That is S$503.68 more, or 92% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Four insurers on the panel have no online price for the Viva. The other 12 still show a wide range, so it helps to get several quotes before you settle on one plan.

Excess

Ten of the 17 plans carry an S$600 excess. Two carry S$500 and three S$800. One carries S$2,500 and one none.

The second-lowest premium, S$650.45, carries S$500. The third, S$683.22, is the plan with the S$2,500 excess. Four plans are estimates, which can change once your details are in.

Their average lowest price is S$660.63. The Viva is 18% below it, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. The Chery QQ is level with it. Other Perodua models are on the Perodua car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page lists more.

Pros and cons on insurance cost

  • For: none of six similar cars is cheaper to insure
  • For: the lowest price holds for older drivers and older cars

  • Against: four insurers have no online price

Costs that depend on you

These vary from owner to owner:

  • Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town
  • Petrol: your mileage and the pump price
  • ERP: your routes and travel times
  • Servicing and parts: ask how easily parts can be found, and for the service record
  • Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left

Before you buy

  • COE expiry date: the years left decide how long you can keep the car
  • Registration date: it sets the road tax surcharge band
  • Service history: what has been replaced and what is due
  • Quotes with your own NCD: since it is what moves this car's price
