A Perodua Kenari has a 989cc engine, so its road tax is a small yearly bill. For an experienced driver, its lowest insurance price is low as well, and it does not rise as the car ages. This guide sets out the figures, with the COE category.
All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They show where the market sits, not what you will pay.
The Kenari on our form
Our quote form prices the Kenari 1.0, with a 989cc engine. It is the version most insurers quote, and the only one here.
The new-car list read for this guide has no Kenari on sale now. So there is no list price, power figure or body type. Any Kenari you buy will be a used car.
COE
For the Kenari 1.0, with its 989cc engine, the category depends on power:
- Category A: if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less
- Category B: if it is more
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. On a used car, the COE runs with the car until it expires. The COE page has the latest results.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives the 989cc engine S$388.84 a year before any age surcharge. That was checked on 2026-10-19.
The surcharge for older cars:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Check the registration date of any Kenari you look at, since it sets which band applies. The road tax page has the formula.
Car insurance for the standard driver
The Perodua Kenari price page prices this case:
- Car: Kenari 1.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
13 insurers price it, across 21 plans. The lowest premium is S$545.00, on a plan that allows any workshop or an authorised one. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$930.10. That is S$385.10 more, or 71% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Three insurers on the panel have no online price for the Kenari.
Excess
Ten of the 21 plans carry an S$600 excess. Two carry S$500, two S$750 and three S$800. Three carry S$2,500 and one S$3,000. Every plan here has some excess.
The second-lowest premium, S$650.45, carries S$500. The third, S$683.22, carries S$2,500. So two plans a short way apart on premium are far apart on excess. Four plans are estimates, which can change once your details are in.
How the price changes
The price page shows the lowest price with one change at a time:
- No NCD (0%): S$880.64, S$335.64 more
- 20% NCD: S$784.56, S$239.56 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years of driving, 30% NCD: S$880.64, S$335.64 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years of driving: S$545.00, the same
- New car, registered this year: S$545.00, the same
- Car 8 years old: S$545.00, the same
Your NCD is the only thing on this list that moves the lowest price. With none, it is 62% higher. With 20%, it is S$239.56 higher. A 27-year-old with 30% NCD pays the no-NCD figure.
Driver age and car age make no difference at the lowest price. A 65-year-old, a new car and an 8-year-old car all start at S$545.00, though one fewer insurer quotes the older driver and the new car.
These are lowest prices only. Dearer plans may move by other amounts.
Against similar small cars
The price page compares six cars with similar engines, same driver and car age:
- Audi A1: S$660.69
- Audi Q2: S$660.69
- Chery A1: S$774.43
- Chery QQ: S$545.00
- Citroen C3: S$604.07
- Daihatsu Copen: S$718.87
Their average lowest price is S$660.63. The Kenari is 18% below it, and none of the six is cheaper to insure. The Chery QQ matches it. Other Perodua models are on the Perodua car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page lists more.
Pros and cons on insurance cost
- For: none of six similar cars is cheaper to insure
- For: a narrower spread between insurers than many cars
- Against: losing your NCD adds S$335.64 at the lowest price
- Against: no plan comes without an excess
Costs that depend on you
These vary from owner to owner:
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus parking at work and in town
- Petrol: your mileage and the pump price
- ERP: your routes and the times you travel
- Servicing and parts: ask how easily parts can be found, and for the service record
- Depreciation: what you pay against the COE years left
Before you buy
- COE expiry date: and the years left
- Registration date: it sets the road tax surcharge band
- Service history: what has been replaced and what is due
- Quotes with your own NCD: it is what moves this car's price
