MINI One in Singapore, a used buy and what it costs each year

The MINI One in Singapore: road tax on its 1,598cc engine, the COE rule and dated car insurance prices from 15 insurers, with similar cars.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The MINI One is not on the new-car list now, so in Singapore you would buy one second hand. Our quote form lists five versions, from a 1,198cc car to the 1,598cc one that most insurers quote. This guide sets out what that car costs to keep each year: road tax and car insurance, plus the COE rule and the costs that depend on you.

Each insurance price here is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. It shows how prices compare for that driver. It is not your quote.

Versions on the form

The new-car list has no entry for the MINI One now, so this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.

Our quote form lists:

  • MINI One 1.2: 1,198cc
  • MINI One 1.4: 1,397cc
  • MINI One 1.5: 1,499cc
  • MINI One and MINI One 1.6 (A): 1,598cc

The figures below are for the MINI One with the 1,598cc engine. The smaller engines pay less road tax.

COE

With a 1,598cc engine, power decides the category. The MINI One needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. For a used car, the COE is paid already. What you pay for is the years left on it. The COE page has later results.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,598cc engine S$741.72 a year, before any age surcharge.

Past 10 years, the surcharge applies:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

An older MINI One may already be paying one of these. Check the registration date, and see the road tax page for the smaller engines.

Insurance: plenty of choice

The MINI One price page prices this example:

  • Car: MINI One 1,598cc, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

15 insurers price it, and only one on our panel does not. The lowest premium is S$787.96 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,854.02. That is S$1,066.06 more, or 135% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

So with plenty of insurers to choose from, the top lowest plan still costs more than twice the bottom one. Comparing is how you find the low end. Some prices shown are estimates; confirm them with the insurer.

Excess

The two lowest plans both carry S$600, the most common level here. Others carry S$500, S$750 or S$800. One plan has none. Several ask S$2,500 or S$3,000. The third-lowest plan asks S$2,500, so look past the premium before you choose it.

Plan levels

Many insurers list a basic plan and fuller ones, priced a few hundred dollars apart. The fuller plans may add cover such as a courtesy car or NCD protection. Compare similar plans across insurers.

Price dates

Each price on the page shows the date it was read. Some are more than a week old and may have moved since.

What moves the price

The lowest price with one detail changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,123.15, S$335.19 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,123.15, S$335.19 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,123.15, S$335.19 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$787.96, the same
  • A new car, registered this year: S$811.71, S$23.75 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$721.59, S$66.37 less

Without the NCD, the lowest price is 43% higher. The younger driver lands on the same figure. The older driver pays the same as the 40-year-old. An 8-year-old car is cheaper to insure, which helps on a used MINI One. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by different sums.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$724.93. The MINI One is 9% above that. Four of the six cost less to insure; the Mazda 3 and BMW X1 cost more. The MINI car insurance page lists other MINIs.

Before you buy

  • Engine: check which of the five versions it is. Road tax follows engine size.
  • Dates: first registration sets the surcharge step and the COE years left.
  • Your quote: price the car with your own NCD and age.
  • History: ask what servicing has been done and what is due.

Costs that depend on you

These depend on where you live and how you use the car, so no single figure fits:

  • Parking: season parking at home and work, plus other stops.
  • Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and times.
  • Servicing: follow the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over time.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later.

The yearly figures

For the MINI One (1,598cc):

  • Road tax: S$741.72 a year, before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)

  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,123.15

For reference: COE closed at S$130,001 (Category A) and S$130,100 (Category B) in the October 2026 1st round.
