What a MINI John Cooper Works Clubman costs to run in Singapore

A used MINI John Cooper Works Clubman in Singapore: road tax on its 1,598cc engine, the COE rule and dated car insurance from nine insurers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The John Cooper Works Clubman on our quote form has a 1,598cc engine. It is not on the new-car list now, so you would buy one used. This guide looks only at what it costs to keep: road tax, car insurance and the COE rule for its engine. It closes with the costs that depend on you.

Each insurance price here is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. It shows how insurers compare for that driver. It is not your quote.

The car priced

There is no entry for this model on the new-car list now, so this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.

Our quote form prices the John Cooper Works Clubman with its 1,598cc engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote.

COE

At 1,598cc, the category turns on power. The JCW Clubman needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. With more power, it needs a Category B COE.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. On a used car the COE is already paid; you pay for its remaining years in the price. The COE page has later rounds.

Road tax

LTA's formula gives the 1,598cc engine S$741.72 a year, before any age surcharge.

The surcharge starts after 10 years:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Check the first registration date to see when the next step lands. The road tax page explains the formula.

The insurance picture

The MINI John Cooper Works Clubman price page prices this example:

  • Car: JCW Clubman, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

9 insurers price it. Seven on our panel do not price it online. The lowest premium is S$865.42 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,896.34. That is S$2,030.92 more, or 235% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

The top end is more than three times the bottom. That gap comes mostly from a single plan; the rest sit far lower. Even so, the cheaper half of the list spans a few hundred dollars. Some prices shown are estimates.

Excess

The excesses here are simple. Most plans carry S$600, the lowest included. One carries S$500, the estimated plans carry S$800, and one has none. No plan here carries a very high excess, so the premiums compare fairly directly. That is less common than you might think: on many cars, the lowest plan hides a large excess.

Plan levels

Several insurers list a basic plan and a fuller one, a couple of hundred dollars apart. Read what the fuller one adds before you pay for it.

Price dates

Each price on the page shows the date it was read. The lowest was read more than a week before this guide, so check it is still current.

One change at a time

The lowest price with one detail changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,343.20, up S$477.78
  • 20% NCD: S$1,343.20, up S$477.78
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,343.20, up S$477.78
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$972.48, up S$107.06
  • A new car, registered this year: S$972.48, up S$107.06
  • A car 8 years old: S$838.84, down S$26.58

Losing the NCD lifts the lowest price by 55%. The younger driver pays the same higher figure. The older driver and a newer car each add a little over a hundred dollars. An 8-year-old car saves a little. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by different sums.

Six similar cars

For the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$724.93. The JCW Clubman is 19% above that. Five of the six cost less to insure, and only the Mazda 3 costs more. The MINI car insurance page lists other MINIs.

Before you buy

  • Engine: confirm the 1,598cc engine on the log card, since road tax follows it.
  • Dates: first registration sets the surcharge step and the COE years left.
  • Your quote: price the car with your own NCD, age and any other drivers.
  • History: ask what servicing has been done and what is due next.

Costs that depend on you

These depend on where you live and how you use the car:

  • Parking: season parking at home and work, plus other stops.
  • Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and times.
  • Servicing: follow the maker's schedule, plus tyres, brakes and a battery over time.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later.
