A MINI Cooper is a small car with a premium price tag. Its running costs are a separate question from its list price. This guide puts figures on the costs that can be measured: the purchase price as listed, the COE, road tax and car insurance. It then names the costs that depend on you.
The premiums are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Use them to compare, not as a quote.
Five Coopers on the new-car list
The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 shows five MINI Cooper versions. It lists the body type as sports, made in the U.K.:
- Cooper 3-Door Electric E 40.7 kWh: electric, 148bhp
- Cooper 3-Door Electric SE 54.2 kWh: electric, 215bhp
- Cooper C 5-Door 1.5: petrol, 1,499cc, 154bhp
- Cooper S 3-Door 2.0: petrol, 1,998cc, 201bhp
- Cooper S Convertible 2.0: petrol, 1,998cc, 201bhp
Our quote form holds eighteen Coopers, from a 1.3 (1,275cc) to electric E and SE versions. The insurance figures below are for the Cooper 5-Door 1.5 (1,499cc). That is the version most of our insurers price.
List prices, as listed
As listed on 2026-10-10, with COE included in the list price that day:
- 3-Door Electric E 40.7 kWh: S$262,888
- 3-Door Electric SE 54.2 kWh: S$277,888
- C 5-Door 1.5: S$290,888
- S 3-Door 2.0: S$307,888
- S Convertible 2.0: S$333,888
These change with COE results. When you compare offers, check what each includes.
The COE rule for the 1.5
The price page's COE note covers the Cooper 5-Door 1.5 and its 1,499cc engine. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs Category B if its power is more.
Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round. The note does not cover the 2.0 or the electric versions, so check those with the seller. The COE page has the latest results.
Road tax
For the 1,499cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$683.66 a year, before any age surcharge. It was checked on 2026-10-19. That covers the 1.5 on our quote form and the C 5-Door 1.5 on sale.
The 2.0 petrol and the electric Coopers pay different sums. The road tax page works them out. For any Cooper over 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
Insurance for the page's driver
The MINI Cooper price page prices this case:
- Car: Cooper 5-Door 1.5, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
- Record: 50% NCD, no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no add-ons
15 insurers price it. The lowest premium is S$787.96. The insurer with the dearest lowest plan asks at least S$2,222.65. That is S$1,434.69 more, or 182% on top. Prices include 9% GST.
That is one of the wider spreads for a small car. The order of insurers also differs from model to model, so price your own car rather than assume.
The excess
Excesses here run from S$0 to S$3,000. The second-lowest premium, S$830.71, carries a S$2,500 excess. The lowest carries S$600. Most others sit between S$500 and S$800.
How the premium shifts
The lowest price with one detail changed, from the price page:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,176.50, S$388.54 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,176.50, S$388.54 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,176.50, S$388.54 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$787.96, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$800.30, S$12.34 more
- A car 8 years old: S$721.59, S$66.37 less
The NCD makes the biggest difference. Without it, the lowest price is 49% higher. A 27-year-old with 3 years' driving lands at the same figure. An 8-year-old Cooper costs less to insure than a 3-year-old one.
These are lowest prices only. Other plans can move by more or less.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
The six average S$735.99. The Cooper is 7% above that. Three are cheaper to insure, and the GLB matches it. Other models from the make are on the MINI car insurance page.
Who it suits on cost
- A settled driver with a full NCD: insurance from S$787.96 for the standard case.
- An older main driver: the 65-year-old pays the same lowest price.
- A buyer of an older car: the 8-year-old line is lower.
- A young driver, or anyone without NCD: expect the lowest price near S$1,176.50.
Costs that depend on you
- Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus what you pay at work and in town.
- Petrol or charging: petrol depends on distance and pump prices. For the electric versions, charging depends on where you can plug in.
- ERP: set by your routes and timing.
- Servicing: follow the maker's schedule, and ask what the warranty covers.
- Depreciation: depends on the price you pay and what the car fetches later.
