The MG S5 is an electric SUV made in China. The list price is one part of what it costs you, and the insurance is another. For the driver priced here, it costs more to insure than all six similar electric cars on its price page. This guide lays out every cost we can put a figure on.
The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They help you compare. They are not a quote.
The version on sale
The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 has one version, an SUV made in China:
- MG S5 EV Luxury 62kWh: electric, 133bhp
Our quote form prices the MG S5, the version most of our insurers quote.
List price
As listed on 2026-10-10, the MG S5 EV Luxury was S$188,888, with COE included that day.
That figure changes with the COE. Ask each dealer what the price includes, such as a home charger.
COE
The COE category for an electric car turns on motor power. A fully electric MG S5 needs a Category A COE if its motor is 110kW (147bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more powerful.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. See the COE page for later rounds.
Road tax
For a 133bhp (99kW) electric motor, LTA's formula gives S$1,495.68 a year, before any age surcharge.
The surcharge applies to electric cars too:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
The road tax page shows how the figure is worked out.
Insurance for one driver
The MG S5 price page prices this example:
- Car: MG S5, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
8 insurers price it. Eight on our panel do not, and two of those do not quote electric cars online at all.
The lowest premium is S$1,287.87 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,090.13. That is S$802.26 more, or 62% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Excess
The lowest plan carries a S$600 excess, like most here. One electric-car plan that allows any workshop carries S$900. One plan has none, and the dearest asks S$2,500. Read the excess with each premium. A plan with no excess costs more up front but nothing extra when you claim. A plan with a S$2,500 excess can leave you with a big bill after a small accident.
Electric-car plans
Several plans on the page are built for electric cars. Check what each covers, such as the battery and charging equipment, before you compare.
Price dates
Each price shows when it was read. The lowest was read more than a week before this guide, so check it is still current.
The NCD matters a great deal
The lowest price with one detail changed:
- No NCD (0%): S$2,711.30, S$1,423.43 more
- 20% NCD: S$2,169.02, S$881.15 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$2,366.05, S$1,078.18 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,428.01, S$140.14 more
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,432.55, S$144.68 more
- A car 8 years old: S$1,201.94, S$85.93 less
Without the NCD, the lowest price is 111% higher, more than double. Even a 20% NCD adds S$881.15. A younger driver pays over a thousand dollars more. A new car also costs more to insure than a 3-year-old one. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by different sums.
If you are a newer driver, or your NCD is below 50%, price your own details before you buy. The insurance could cost far more than the example.
Against other electric cars
For the same driver and car age:
- BYD Atto 3: S$789.73
- BYD M6: S$799.24
- Tesla Model 3: S$1,093.31
- Tesla Model Y: S$1,147.48
- Hyundai Ioniq 5: S$954.21
- BYD Dolphin: S$787.08
Their average lowest price is S$928.51. The MG S5 is 39% above that, and all six cost less to insure. Over several years, that gap can eat into the saving on the list price. The MG car insurance page has other MG models.
