The electric MG 4 in Singapore, costs and car insurance

The electric MG 4 in Singapore: the COE rule for its motor, road tax surcharges and dated car insurance prices from nine insurers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The MG 4 on our quote form is a fully electric car. If you are weighing it against other electric cars, a few costs work differently from a petrol car. Road tax and the COE category both follow motor power, not engine size. This guide sets out each cost and the figures we can show.

The insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They help you compare. Your own premium will differ.

The version priced here

The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.

The price page prices the MG 4 (electric), the version most of our insurers quote. All the insurance figures below are for that car. If you are looking at a used one, check the details on the log card, as insurers price by version.

COE

For an electric car, the category depends on motor power. A fully electric MG 4 needs a Category A COE if its motor is 110kW (147bhp) or less. If it is more powerful, it needs a Category B COE.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. The COE page has the latest results.

Road tax

An electric car's road tax is set by its motor power. The new-car list gives no motor power for this car, so we cannot show a figure for it. The road tax page explains how motor power sets the sum, so you can work it out once you know the motor.

The age surcharge applies to electric cars too:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Insurance for one driver

The MG 4 price page prices this example:

  • Car: MG 4, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

9 insurers price it. Seven on our panel do not. Two of those do not quote electric cars online, and one prices only repairs at any workshop online.

The lowest premium is S$1,173.27 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,090.13. That is S$916.86 more, or 78% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

So the dearest lowest plan costs close to double the lowest. Some prices shown are estimates; check those with the insurer.

Excess

The lowest plan has a S$600 excess. Others carry S$800, and one electric-car plan that allows any workshop carries S$900. One plan has no excess. The dearest lowest plan asks S$2,500. Read the excess with each premium.

Plans made for electric cars

Several plans on the page are built for electric cars. Check what they cover, such as the battery, charging cable or home charger, before you compare prices.

How the price moves

The lowest price with one detail changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$1,334.09, S$160.82 more
  • 20% NCD: S$1,334.09, S$160.82 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,334.09, S$160.82 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,334.09, S$160.82 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$1,334.09, S$160.82 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$1,170.40, S$2.87 less

This list is unusual. Five different changes land on the same lowest price, S$1,334.09. For each of those, a different insurer's plan comes out lowest than for the example driver. So the plan that is lowest for you depends on your details, which is another reason to compare. Losing the NCD adds 14%, a small step. An older car saves only a few dollars. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move differently.

Against other electric cars

For the same driver and car age:

Their average lowest price is S$928.51. The MG 4 is 26% above that, and all six cost less to insure for this driver. The MG car insurance page has other MG models.

Before you buy

  • Price your own details: the lowest plan here may not be the lowest for you.
  • Check the warranty: ask what the battery warranty covers and for how long.
  • Check charging: find out what chargers your home car park has, and their rates.

Costs that depend on you

  • Charging: the cost depends on where you charge and how far you drive. Check whether your HDB or condo car park has chargers.
  • Parking: season parking at home and work, plus other stops.
  • ERP: your routes and timing.
  • Servicing: follow the maker's schedule. Ask how long the battery warranty runs and what it covers.
  • Depreciation: what you pay against what the car fetches later.

The yearly figures

For the MG 4:

  • Road tax: no figure, as the new-car list gives no motor power; see the road tax page
  • Insurance, example driver: from S$1,173.27 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$1,334.09
  • Insurance, car 8 years old: from S$1,170.40

The one-off cost we can show is the COE. It closed at S$130,001 (Category A) and S$130,100 (Category B) in the October 2026 1st round.
