The MG HS on our quote form has a 1,496cc engine. It is not on the new-car list now, so this guide is for anyone looking at one second hand. It sets out the yearly costs we can show in figures, road tax and car insurance, and the COE rule for this engine. It ends with the costs you will need to price yourself.
Every insurance price here is an example for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. It shows how prices compare. It is not what you will be quoted.
The car priced
There is no entry for the MG HS on the new-car list now. So this guide gives no list price, power figure or body type.
Our quote form prices the MG HS with its 1,496cc petrol engine, the version most of our insurers quote.
The COE rule
With a 1,496cc engine, power decides the category. The MG HS needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less, and a Category B COE if it is more.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. On a used car, the COE is already paid. Its remaining years are part of the price. The COE page has later rounds.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives the 1,496cc engine S$681.90 a year, before any age surcharge.
Past 10 years, the surcharge applies:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
A smaller engine keeps the base figure modest. The road tax page has the formula.
Car insurance for the example driver
The MG HS price page prices this case:
- Car: MG HS, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
12 insurers price it. Four on our panel do not. The lowest premium is S$811.71 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,749.12. That is S$937.41 more, or 115% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
So the top lowest plan costs more than twice the bottom one. That is a large gap for a car with a 1,496cc engine. Some prices shown are estimates; confirm them with the insurer.
Excess
The lowest plan carries S$600. The second-lowest asks S$3,000, which is a big sum to find after an accident. Elsewhere on the page, plans set S$500, S$600, S$800 or S$2,500, and one has none. Look at the excess every time you look at a premium.
Plan levels
Several insurers list two or three plans. The fuller ones may add cover such as a courtesy car or NCD protection. Compare similar plans across insurers.
Price dates
Each price shows when it was read. Some here were read more than a week ago, so check how recent each one is.
What moves the price
The lowest price with one detail changed:
- No NCD (0%): S$1,101.73, S$290.02 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,093.19, S$281.48 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,101.73, S$290.02 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$811.71, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$836.07, S$24.36 more
- A car 8 years old: S$742.90, S$68.81 less
Without the NCD, the lowest price is 36% higher. A 20% NCD helps only a little: S$1,093.19 against S$1,101.73 with none. The older driver pays the same. An 8-year-old car costs less to insure, which helps on a used HS. These are lowest prices only; other plans may move by different sums.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page compares:
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
Their average lowest price is S$735.99. The MG HS is 10% above that. Four of the six cost less to insure. The BMW X1 matches it, and only the Mazda 3 costs more. Other MGs are on the MG car insurance page.
