Daihatsu Copen in Singapore, road tax, COE and insurance costs

The Daihatsu Copen 1.0 in Singapore: road tax for its 989cc engine, the COE rule and dated insurance prices from seven insurers.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Daihatsu Copen has a 989cc engine, among the smallest on our quote form. That keeps road tax low. Insurance is another matter: only a few insurers price it online, and its premiums sit above those of most small cars. This page sets out the figures.

All insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not a quote. Your own premium depends on your details.

The car priced

The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now. There is no list price, power or body type on this page.

Our quote form prices the Daihatsu Copen 1.0, with a 989cc engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote.

Road tax

For the 989cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$388.84 a year. That was checked on 2026-10-19 and is before any age surcharge.

Older cars pay a surcharge on top:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

The road tax page has sums for other engines.

The COE

With a 989cc engine, the Copen 1.0 needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs a Category B COE if its power is more.

In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These change every round; the COE page has the latest.

On a used Copen, check the COE expiry date. It sets how long the car can stay on the road.

Car insurance

The standard profile

The Daihatsu Copen price page prices:

  • Car: Copen 1.0, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

Seven insurers

Only 7 insurers price the Copen for that driver. The lowest premium is S$718.87 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,177.08. That is S$458.21 more, or 64% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Nine insurers on our panel have no online price for this model. That leaves fewer choices than for most cars, so each quote counts.

At the lowest price, insurance costs well above the road tax. So for this car, insurance is the larger of the two yearly bills.

The excess

Most plans set a S$600 excess. One sets S$500 and three S$800. One plan has no excess. None on this page goes higher than S$800.

That narrow range makes the plans easier to compare on premium.

How the price changes

The price page shows the lowest price when one thing changes:

  • No NCD (0%): S$901.47, S$182.60 more
  • 20% NCD: S$901.47, S$182.60 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$901.47, S$182.60 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$887.85, S$168.98 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$901.47, S$182.60 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$713.47, S$5.40 less

Losing the NCD adds 25% at the lowest price. Four of the six changes land on the same figure, S$901.47, including a new car.

The older driver pays more. A new Copen costs more to insure than the 3-year-old car on the page. An 8-year-old car costs almost the same.

These are lowest prices. With only seven insurers, the lowest price may shift if one of them changes its rates.

Points to check in a quote

When comparing, also look at:

  • Workshop: these prices assume an authorised workshop. Ask whether any-workshop cover is offered, and at what price.
  • Named drivers: an extra, younger driver can raise the premium.
  • NCD protection: an extra some plans offer.
  • Excess: your share of each claim.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar small cars by engine size:

Their average is S$631.65. The Copen costs 14% more than that, and 5 of the six are cheaper to insure. Only the Chery A1 costs more.

Other Daihatsu models are on the Daihatsu car insurance page. The cheapest cars to insure page ranks models across makes.

Checks before you buy

For a used Copen, confirm:

  • COE expiry: how many years of use remain.
  • Road tax: when it falls due, and whether a surcharge applies.
  • Your own quote: with few insurers pricing it online, get yours before you commit.

Costs that depend on you

These have no single figure:

  • Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus elsewhere.
  • Petrol: your distance and the pump price.
  • ERP: your routes and hours.
  • Parts and servicing: for an older car, ask how parts are sourced and who services it.
  • Depreciation: for a used car, mostly the COE years left.

The yearly figures

For the Daihatsu Copen 1.0 (989cc), dated as shown:

  • Road tax: S$388.84 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$718.87 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$901.47
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$713.47

A fresh COE in the October 2026 1st round was S$130,001 (Category A) or S$130,100 (Category B).
