The Chery A5 is a car that has left the new-car list, so any A5 you buy now is used. For a car like this, the yearly costs matter as much as the price. This page covers road tax, the COE and car insurance, then the costs only you can work out.
Insurance prices are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They show how prices compare. They are not a quote for you.
Which A5
The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now. There is no list price, power or body type on this page.
Our quote form lists three versions:
- Chery A5 1.6: 1,597cc
- Chery A5 1.8: 1,845cc
- Chery A5 2.0: 1,971cc
The figures below are for the A5 1.6, the version most of our insurers quote. The 1.8 and 2.0 have larger engines. Their road tax is higher, and their premiums may differ.
Insurance for a standard driver
The details
The Chery A5 price page prices:
- Car: A5 1.6, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, 10 to 19 years of driving
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
The range
11 insurers price the A5 for that driver. The lowest premium is S$622.34 a year. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,214.70. That is S$592.36 more, or 95% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Five insurers on our panel have no online price for this model.
A gap of close to double for the same car and driver is common. It is the clearest reason to get more than one price.
Excess
Most plans set a S$600 excess. Two set S$750, three S$800 and one S$500. Three plans set S$2,500 and one S$3,000.
The higher excesses are a large sum against the value of an older car. Read them as carefully as the premiums.
How the lowest price moves
The price page shows the lowest price when one detail changes:
- No NCD (0%): S$966.78, S$344.44 more
- 20% NCD: S$966.78, S$344.44 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$966.78, S$344.44 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$622.34, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$642.42, S$20.08 more
- A car 8 years old: S$569.36, S$52.98 less
Without NCD, the lowest price is 55% higher. The 20% NCD and younger-driver cases reach the same figure.
The 65-year-old driver pays the same as the 40-year-old. An 8-year-old A5 is a little cheaper to insure than a 3-year-old one. Most A5s on the market will be older still, so the price for your car may sit lower again.
All of these are lowest prices. Other plans may move by other amounts.
COE
With a 1,597cc engine, the A5 1.6 needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs a Category B COE if its power is more.
In the October 2026 1st round, Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100. These change every round. The COE page has the latest.
On a used car, the useful question is how many COE years remain. That sets how long you can keep the car before renewing or scrapping it.
Road tax
For the 1,597cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$741.14 a year. That was checked on 2026-10-19, before any age surcharge.
An older A5 may pay a surcharge on top:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
For the 1.8 and 2.0 engines, see the road tax page.
Points to check when comparing quotes
A low premium is only part of what a plan offers. When you set quotes side by side, a few points are worth checking:
- Workshop: the prices here are for repairs at an authorised workshop. Some plans let you use any workshop, which can change the price.
- Named drivers: if someone else will drive the car, see how each plan prices them.
- NCD protection: some plans offer it as an extra. Check what it costs and when it applies.
- Excess: as above, the figure you pay on each claim.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
- Hyundai Kona: S$721.59
They average S$724.93. The A5 comes in 14% below that. Only one of them, the Toyota Sienta, is cheaper to insure.
Other Chery models are on the Chery car insurance page. The cheapest cars to insure page has a wider ranking.
Costs that rest with you
Some costs depend on how you use the car:
- Parking: season parking at your HDB block or condo, plus elsewhere.
- Petrol: your mileage and the pump price.
- ERP: your routes and hours.
- Parts and repairs: with an older car from a smaller make, ask how easy parts are to source and how long they take. Tyres, brakes and a battery come up over time.
- Depreciation: on a used car, mostly a question of COE years left.
Yearly costs in one list
For the Chery A5 1.6 (1,597cc), dated as shown:

- Insurance, no NCD: from S$966.78
