Chery A1 running costs in Singapore, road tax and insurance

The small Chery A1 in Singapore: COE, road tax for the 1,083cc engine and dated car insurance prices for one stated driver.

20 Oct 2026 · 5 min read

The Chery A1 is a car with a small engine that you will now find only on the used market in Singapore. Small engine, small road tax: its fixed costs are modest. This page sets out those costs and what car insurance looks like for a typical driver.

All insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. They are not a quote. Your own price depends on your details.

Versions on the quote form

The new-car list has no entry for this model on sale now, so there is no list price, power or body type to give.

Our quote form lists two versions:

  • Chery A1 1.1: 1,083cc
  • Chery A1 1.3: 1,297cc

The figures below are for the A1 1.1, the version most of our insurers quote. The 1.3 has a larger engine, so its road tax is higher.

Road tax

For the 1,083cc engine, LTA's formula gives S$439.68 a year. That was checked on 2026-10-19, before any age surcharge.

Many A1s on the road today will be older cars. The surcharge applies after 10 years:

  • Over 10 years: +10%
  • Over 11 years: +20%
  • Over 12 years: +30%
  • Over 13 years: +40%
  • Over 14 years: +50%

Check the registration date on any car you look at. The road tax page has the sum for the 1.3's engine.

The COE

With a 1,083cc engine, the Chery A1 1.1 needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs a Category B COE if its power is more.

Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round. The COE page has the latest results.

On a used A1, the COE is part of the price. The years left on it decide how long you can keep the car as it is. That is often the main question with an older car.

Insurance for the standard driver

Who is priced

The Chery A1 price page prices one driver and car:

  • Car: A1 1.1, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
  • Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
  • Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
  • Repairs: authorised workshop, no options

The prices

7 insurers price the A1 for that driver. The lowest premium is S$774.43. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$1,160.17. That is S$385.74 more, or 50% on top. All prices include 9% GST.

Nine insurers on our panel have no online price for this model. With fewer prices to choose from, it helps to compare all of them.

Your own car is likely older than 3 years. Use the car-age line below as a guide to how that shifts the price.

The excess

The excess on this page varies a lot. Three plans set S$600 and three S$800. One sets S$500, two set S$2,500 and one S$3,000. One plan has no excess.

On an older car, a S$2,500 or S$3,000 excess is a large share of any repair bill. Look at it as closely as the premium.

What changes the premium

Here is the lowest price with one detail changed:

  • No NCD (0%): S$929.24, S$154.81 more
  • 20% NCD: S$929.24, S$154.81 more
  • Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$929.24, S$154.81 more
  • Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$846.30, S$71.87 more
  • A new car, registered this year: S$797.73, S$23.30 more
  • A car 8 years old: S$737.13, S$37.30 less

The largest change is losing the NCD, at 20% more. That is a smaller jump than on many cars. A younger driver and a 20% NCD reach the same figure.

An older driver pays a bit more. The car's age moves the price only a little: an 8-year-old A1 is slightly cheaper to insure.

These are lowest prices. Other plans may move by other amounts.

Against similar cars

For the same driver and car age, the price page lists six similar cars:

Their average is S$612.19. The Chery A1 costs 27% more than that, and all 6 are cheaper to insure.

So, against cars with similar engines, the A1 is not cheap to insure at the lowest price. Part of the reason may be that fewer insurers price it. Other Chery models are on the Chery car insurance page, and the cheapest cars to insure page ranks models across makes.

Costs that depend on you

Some costs have no single figure:

  • Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus work and outings.
  • Petrol: depends on how far you drive and the pump price.
  • ERP: depends on routes and hours.
  • Repairs and parts: on an older car from a smaller make, ask how easy parts are to find. Tyres, brakes and a battery come due over the years.
  • Depreciation: on a used car, mostly a matter of the COE years left.

Summary of yearly costs

For the Chery A1 1.1 (1,083cc), dated as shown:

  • Road tax: S$439.68 a year before any age surcharge (LTA's formula, checked 2026-10-19)
  • Insurance, standard driver: from S$774.43 a year (20 October 2026)
  • Insurance, no NCD: from S$929.24
  • Insurance, a car 8 years old: from S$737.13

A fresh COE in the October 2026 1st round was S$130,001 (Category A) or S$130,100 (Category B).
