A family of six needs a car with at least six seats. This breakdown looks at one option, the Honda Freed, an MPV made in Japan. It goes through the costs one at a time. Costs with a figure in the facts get that figure. Costs that depend on the owner are described in words.
Who this breakdown is for
The example household is two parents and four children. One parent drives most of the time. The other may drive on some days, so a second named driver matters.
The insurance figures below come from the Freed's price page. They are for a main driver aged 40, married, in an office job, with 10 years of driving. That driver has a 50% no-claim discount and no claims. The car is 3 years old, for private use, with comprehensive cover and repairs at an authorised workshop. Your own price depends on your own details.
The list price
The new-car list showed seven Honda Freed versions, as listed on 10 October 2026. These list prices include COE as listed that day.
- Freed 2020 1.5 G LED Honda Sensing Power Doors 7-Seater, petrol: S$183,900
- Freed 1.5 AIR EX 7-Seater, petrol: S$194,200
- Freed Hybrid 2020 1.5 G Honda Sensing Dual Power Doors 7-Seater, petrol-electric: S$196,000
- Freed Hybrid 1.5 AIR EX e:HEV, petrol-electric: S$202,500
- Freed Hybrid 1.5 HS7 e:HEV, petrol-electric: S$203,899
- Freed Hybrid 1.5 HE7 e:HEV, petrol-electric: S$207,899
- Freed Hybrid 1.5 AIR e:HEV, petrol-electric: S$228,800
Three of these versions carry 7-Seater in their names. The list does not state the seat count for the others. For a family of six, check the seat count of the exact version with the seller before paying a deposit.
Most families take a car loan for part of the price. The facts give no loan limits or interest rates. LTA's OneMotoring site and your lender can explain the rules that apply.
COE category
The Freed on the price page has a 1,496cc engine. It needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs a Category B COE if its power is more.
In the October 2026, 2nd round, Category A closed at S$132,004. Category B closed at S$131,901. The list prices above already include COE as listed on 10 October 2026. Ask the seller which category applies to the version you pick. The COE page has the latest results.
Road tax
LTA's formula puts road tax for a 1,496cc engine at S$681.90 a year, checked on 19 October 2026. That is before any age surcharge.
The surcharge starts once a car is over 10 years old:
- Over 10 years: plus 10%
- Over 11 years: plus 20%
- Over 12 years: plus 30%
- Over 13 years: plus 40%
- Over 14 years: plus 50%
A family that keeps the car past ten years pays more road tax each year after that. The road tax guide explains how it works.
Insurance for the main driver
On 26 October 2026, 16 insurers priced the Freed for the example driver. The lowest premium was S$642.42 a year, including 9% GST. The highest of the insurers' lowest prices was S$1,341.13. That is S$698.71 more, or 109% more, for the same driver and car.
The gap is wide, so it pays to compare quotes. Check what each plan covers, not just the premium. One of the lower-priced plans on the page is a collision-only plan, not a full comprehensive plan.
Against six similar cars, the Freed's lowest price was 7% below their average lowest price of S$693.29. One of them was lower. The Toyota Sienta, another 1,496cc car, came in at S$604.07.
What changes with a second named driver
The price page prices one main driver. It does not show what adding a second named driver costs. Each insurer sets its own charge, and some may not charge at all. Ask each one directly.
The page does show how the premium moves when the main driver changes:
- A driver aged 27, with 3 years of driving and a 30% NCD: lowest price S$1,065.51, which is S$423.09 more.
- A driver aged 65, with 20 years of driving and a 50% NCD: lowest price S$642.42, the same. Fifteen insurers priced this driver, not 16.
This suggests age and driving experience matter to insurers. A younger or newer second driver may change the quote more than an experienced one. The guide on young drivers covers this in more detail.
When adding a second driver, ask these questions:
- Does the premium change, and by how much?
- Is there a higher excess when that driver is at the wheel?
- What happens if someone not named on the policy drives?
- Whose NCD drops if the second driver makes a claim?
Any claim normally counts against the policyholder's NCD, whoever was driving.
How NCD, car age and excess shift the premium
The no-claim discount has the biggest effect on the page. With no NCD, the lowest price rose to S$1,065.51, which is 66% more. With a 20% NCD, it was also S$1,065.51. The NCD guide explains how the discount builds up and how a claim cuts it.
Car age moved the price less. A new car registered this year had a lowest price of S$660.69, which is S$18.27 more. A car 8 years old came in at S$586.41, which is S$56.01 less.
The excess is what you pay towards a claim before the insurer pays. On the Freed page, excesses ranged from S$500 to S$3,000. A low premium can come with a high excess. Weigh both together. The excess guide covers this, and the workshop guide explains how the workshop choice affects cover.
Costs that depend on the owner
Some costs vary too much to put a figure on. The facts give none for them.
- Petrol or charging. This depends on the version, how far the family drives, and pump prices.
- Parking. Season parking at an HDB car park, at work and at schools varies by place and by type of car park.
- ERP. Charges depend on which roads and expressways the family uses, and at what time.
- Servicing and tyres. These depend on mileage and the workshop.
- Loan interest. This depends on the amount borrowed, the rate and the loan period.
For school runs with four children, daily distance and peak-hour driving can add up. Track a month of trips to get a rough sense of these costs.
