The BYD Sealion 8 is a plug-in hybrid SUV on the Singapore new-car list. Because it is new, only a few insurers price it online so far. This page shows what each cost comes to, with the figures we have.
The insurance figures are examples for one stated driver, read on 20 October 2026. Think of them as a guide to how prices fall, not as a quote.
The version listed
The new-car list read on 2026-10-10 has one version, an SUV made in China:
- Sealion 8 Plug-in Hybrid 1.5 DM-i Dynamic: petrol-electric, 1,498cc, 275bhp
Our quote form prices the Sealion 8 1.5 DM-i Dynamic, with the same 1,498cc engine. It is the version most of our insurers quote.
The price to buy
As listed on 2026-10-10, with COE included in the list price that day, the Sealion 8 Plug-in Hybrid 1.5 DM-i Dynamic was S$236,388.
That figure moves with the COE and with each dealer's terms. Compare what each offer includes, such as warranty and servicing, before you compare totals.
COE
The price page's COE section gives the rule. With a 1,498cc engine, the Sealion 8 1.5 DM-i Dynamic needs a Category A COE if its power is 97kW (130bhp) or less. It needs a Category B COE if its power is more.
Category A closed at S$130,001 and Category B at S$130,100 in the October 2026 1st round. Both change every bidding round. The COE page shows the latest.
Road tax
LTA's formula gives S$683.08 a year for the 1,498cc engine. That was checked on 2026-10-19 and is before any age surcharge.
Once the car is past 10 years, the surcharge applies:
- Over 10 years: +10%
- Over 11 years: +20%
- Over 12 years: +30%
- Over 13 years: +40%
- Over 14 years: +50%
For an SUV, this is a modest road tax, because it follows the small engine. The road tax page covers other sizes.
Insurance today
The standard profile
The BYD Sealion 8 price page prices:
- Car: Sealion 8 1.5 DM-i Dynamic, registered 3 years ago, private use, comprehensive cover
- Driver: aged 40, married, office job, driving 10 to 19 years
- Record: 50% no-claim discount (NCD), no claims
- Repairs: authorised workshop, no options
Six insurers
Only 6 insurers price the Sealion 8. The lowest premium is S$1,046.39. The insurer whose lowest plan is dearest asks at least S$2,078.78. That is S$1,032.39 more, or 99% on top. All prices include 9% GST.
Ten insurers on our panel have no online price for this model. That is a large share. As the model becomes more common, more insurers may add it. For now, you have fewer choices than with an established car.
Excess
Most plans on this page set a S$600 excess. One sets S$500. The dearest sets S$2,500, and one plan has no excess.
You pay the excess yourself on each claim, so set it beside the premium when you compare.
How the price changes
The price page lists the lowest price after one change:
- No NCD (0%): S$2,092.78, S$1,046.39 more
- 20% NCD: S$1,674.22, S$627.83 more
- Driver aged 27, 3 years' driving, 30% NCD: S$1,464.95, S$418.56 more
- Driver aged 65, 20 or more years' driving: S$1,046.39, the same
- A new car, registered this year: S$1,046.39, the same
- A car 8 years old: S$1,046.39, the same
The NCD is everything here. With no discount, the lowest price is 100% higher: it doubles. A 20% NCD still costs a good deal more than 50%.
The other changes do not move the lowest price at all. An older driver, a new car and an 8-year-old car all land on the same S$1,046.39.
These are lowest prices. Other plans may react differently.
Against similar cars
For the same driver and car age, the price page compares six similar cars:
- Toyota Corolla Altis: S$642.42
- Mazda 3: S$927.36
- Toyota Sienta: S$604.07
- BMW X1: S$811.71
- Mercedes-Benz GLB: S$787.96
- Honda Freed: S$642.42
They average S$735.99. The Sealion 8 costs 42% more, and all 6 are cheaper to insure.
The comparison is with smaller-engined cars, since the list is matched on engine size. Other BYD models are on the BYD car insurance page. The cheapest cars to insure page ranks models across makes.
Costs that depend on you
These have no single figure:
- Charging and petrol: as a plug-in hybrid, it can use both. The split depends on how often you charge, charger rates, distance and pump prices.
- Parking: HDB or condo season parking, plus elsewhere. Check your car parks for chargers and for lot size.
- ERP: your routes and hours.
- Servicing: the maker's schedule for the engine and electric parts, plus tyres and brakes. Ask what the battery warranty covers.
- Depreciation: depends on what you pay and what the car fetches later.
