This is a sample list for a first trip to Albania. It runs from the best-known sights to the quieter places. Each entry covers what it is, who it suits and when to go. Use it to shape a plan of one or two weeks.
From Changi, plan your route and connections early. Ticket prices and opening times for every sight below vary, so check them before you go.
1. Skanderbeg Square, Tirana
The capital's main square is the natural first stop. Around it stand the National History Museum, the Et'hem Bey Mosque and the clock tower. The open, flat space is easy for families with a pram. Solo travellers can use it as a base to get their bearings.
When to go: Early morning or evening, when it is quieter.
2. Berat Old Town
Berat's old town has white Ottoman-era houses stacked up a hillside. Walk the Mangalem and Gorica quarters on either side of the Osum River. Above them, people still live inside the castle walls. Couples and solo travellers tend to stay a night or two.
When to go: Spring or autumn, for easier walking on the castle climb.
3. Gjirokastër
This southern town is built of grey stone, from its walls to its roofs. The hilltop castle holds a museum and gives wide views over the valley. The old bazaar lanes have small craft stalls. The steep cobbled streets are hard work with a pram, so a baby carrier helps.
When to go: Spring or autumn; avoid the middle of the day in summer.
4. Butrint
Butrint is an ancient site near the southern coast, set in woodland by a lagoon. You walk past layers of Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Venetian ruins. The old theatre is the highlight for most visitors. It suits history fans and families with older children.
When to go: Early in the day. Bring water and sun cover.
5. Ksamil and the Albanian Riviera
Ksamil has clear water and small islands just offshore. Further north, Dhërmi, Himarë and Jale offer more beaches backed by mountains. Couples like the quieter coves. Families often pick Ksamil for its calm, shallow swimming spots.
When to go: Late spring or early autumn for fewer crowds. Summer is the busiest time.
6. The Blue Eye
The Blue Eye, or Syri i Kaltër, is a deep spring of bright blue water in a forest. It sits inland from Sarandë and pairs well with a Riviera stay. A short, mostly flat walk leads to the spring. It makes an easy half-day trip for families.
When to go: Morning, before the day-trip groups arrive.
7. Krujë Castle and Bazaar
Krujë is a hill town that makes an easy day trip from Tirana. The castle houses a museum on Skanderbeg, the national hero. Below it, an old covered bazaar sells carpets, embroidery and other crafts. Families and first-time visitors find it a compact, rewarding outing.
When to go: A weekday, when the bazaar is calmer.
8. Tirana's Bunker Museums
Albania's communist years left bunkers all over the country. In Tirana, some of these spaces are now museums on that period. They suit solo travellers and couples who like modern history. Some exhibits are heavy going for young children.
When to go: Any time. They are a good choice on a rainy day.
9. Blloku and the New Bazaar
Blloku was once closed to ordinary residents. Today it is a busy district of cafes, bars and shops. The New Bazaar, or Pazari i Ri, is a market area with stalls of fruit, cheese, olives and honey. Couples enjoy Blloku at night, while families can graze their way round the market.
When to go: The market in the morning, Blloku after dark.
10. Albanian Food
Think of it as a hawker crawl, Balkan style. Try byrek, a flaky filled pastry, from a local bakery for breakfast. Look out for tavë kosi, a baked lamb and yoghurt dish, and fërgesë, a peppery dish of peppers and cheese. On the coast, eat fresh fish; in the mountains, try lamb and local cheese.
When to go: Any time. Lunch is a good time to try home-style dishes.
11. Shkodër and Rozafa Castle
Shkodër is a relaxed northern city where many locals get around by bicycle. Rozafa Castle sits on a hill above town, with views over Lake Shkodër and the rivers. It suits solo travellers and couples. It is also the usual gateway to the Albanian Alps.
When to go: Late afternoon, for the light from the castle walls.
12. Mount Dajti
Mount Dajti rises on the edge of Tirana inside a national park. A cable car runs up from the city's outskirts. At the top you find forest walks and views back over the capital. It is a simple nature break for families staying in Tirana.
When to go: A clear day, so the views are worth the ride.
13. Theth and Valbona in the Albanian Alps
These mountain villages sit in deep valleys in the far north. A well-known hiking trail links the two. Fit solo travellers and couples come for the walking. Families with older children can pick shorter valley walks instead.
When to go: Summer or early autumn. Access depends on road conditions, so check locally before you set off.
14. Lake Ohrid at Pogradec
Pogradec is a lakeside town on the Albanian shore of Lake Ohrid. It has a long promenade and a slower pace than the coast. It suits families and couples who want a quiet few days. It also works as a stop between Tirana and the south-east.
When to go: Summer evenings, when locals stroll the promenade.
Before You Go
A few points from official travel notes are worth knowing.
- Weather: Severe weather can cause flooding from December to February. Heavy snow can also disrupt transport and services. If you travel in the December school holidays, follow local media, weather forecasts and instructions from local authorities.
- Water: Tap water and unpasteurised milk can make you ill. Drink bottled water and only pasteurised (UHT) milk. This matters most for children.
- Emergency numbers: Dial 112 for general emergencies, 129 for police, 127 for medical emergencies and 128 for fire.
- Entry and local rules: Check entry requirements and any other rules before you book. You can find MFA's travel advice on our Albania travel page.
Transport times, fares and opening hours change often. Confirm them close to your travel date.
